Whether it’s the nonchalant punk-funk of LCD Soundsystem or the Kraftwerk-with-ADHD stylings of Metronomy, dance music with an indie sensibility has provoked many a possessive tug-of-war between the genre teams at 7digital. A temporary ceasefire was called in 2008, in honour of Cut Copy’s glorious In Ghost Colours, on which they perfectly straddled the space between rock and electronica, uniting both musical camps in singing their praise. Now Melbourne’s finest have returned, wielding the kind of psychedelic, sunny, synth-pop that could see them once more transcend simple compartmentalisation. But the nods to Screamadelica, on the trippy ‘Sun God’, and to Fleetwood Mac, on ‘Take Me Over’, haven’t passed under our radar, and so the indie team are proudly bagging Zonoscope as our own - in your face dance page!
