If Dylan Carson had set out to compete with the staggering success of former roomy Kurt Cobain, he’d have been sentencing himself to a life of disappointment. Fortunately, he chose to channel his musical efforts into Earth, thereby founding the drone-metal genre and subsequently inspiring highly influential artists like Sun 0))), who even claim they formed as an “Earth tribute band”. Two decades since their formation, and in what should be the twilight of their career, they’ve proven they’re still at the peak of their powers with yet another epic assault of expansive doom rock on this, their sixth studio album. And whilst Earth will never boast the crossover-appeal of Nirvana, the indelible mark they’ve made on the alt-rock landscape is assured.
