Thanks to her associations with Rinse FM and that hit collaboration with Magnetic Man on ‘Perfect Stranger’, Brit School’s Katy B has already been nicknamed the “Queen of Dubstep” by the lazier members of the music press. But if we must rebrand her anything, it really ought to be “Queen of the Club”, on the strength of a debut album that deftly genre-hops to render more specific pigeonholing misleading. Yes, commercial dubstep’s well represented here, most notably in the Benga-produced Katy On A Mission, but so are UK funky, grime and garage. In fact, discounting Katy’s clear-as-a-bell, R&B-influenced vocals, the only common factor on this supremely-assured collection is its irresistible danceability.
