Whilst the term “post-rock” is often associated with sprawling soundscapes, schizophrenic dynamics and a fair bit of contemplative beard-stroking, it’s not usually synonymous with a sense of fun. Mogwai have been actively bucking this trend for 16 years now, becoming notorious for infusing their ear-splitting noisemongery with a wickedly dark sense of humour. So, from the makers of Come on Die Young and ‘I Love You, I’m Going To Blow Up Your School’ comes the provocatively-entitled Hardcore Will Never Die, But You Will. Not only is it a fearsome mix of Krautrock, jagged fuzz, ponderous rock and some surprisingly serene beauty, but it also features the superbly-titled ‘You’re Lionel Richie’, which is surely worth the purchase price alone.
