If there’s one complaint you can’t level at Patrick Wolf, it’s that he’s afraid to express his feelings. In fact, having been unflinchingly candid for nine years now, it’s not unfair to say his sonic adventure has been somewhat of an emotional rollercoaster thus far. We take great delight in reporting, then, that on Lupercalia we find our favourite avant-pop chameleon with a spring in his step and love in his heart. From the sun-drenched Moogs and ‘Absolute Beginners’-esque sax of ‘The City’, to the heartstring-tugging ‘Together’, which fuses Giorgio Moroder disco with angelic choirs and swoon-worthy string swoops, his fifth long player is unabashedly romantic and infectiously upbeat. We do love a happy ending.
