Boasting a wooden chair for a drum kit, a vintage organ christened “Miles” and a debut full of ramshackle folk-pop ditties, Slow Club first won our hearts back in 2009. Two years on the quirk-some, Sheffield-bred twosome have dropped the chair (his drug habit spiralled out of control, apparently) and gained an amp, putting it to good use on this, their sparkling second album. And whether making a beatific racket that belies their numbers, as on the gleefully cacophonous, indie-pop stomper ‘Two Cousins’, or transfixing with swoonsome harmonies and a solitary guitar, as on the beautifully bluesy ‘Gold Mountain’, Paradise is very fine indeed.
