Take The Shins: they’re saddled with the (potentially career-crippling) handicap of possessing possibly the worst name in musical history, and it’s had no adverse affect on their appeal whatsoever. Their success is all down to the creative force driving the five-piece: James Mercer’s innate gift for melody. Port of Morrow finds Mercer supported by a whole new line-up and bears the hallmarks of his time spent with Danger Mouse in Broken Bells. It’s a smoother, studio-enhanced take on their trademark indie-pop sound and makes for utterly infectious listening.
