What we said:
When you can boast countertenor vocals as distinctive as Hayden Thorpe’s in your artillery, you wouldn’t think it’d take more than one album for your music to get noticed. And yet it was Wild Beasts’ spookily beautiful second album Two Dancers that proved to be their breakthrough, mesmerising both the listening public and the Mercury Music Prize jury back in 2009. Now Kendal’s finest have returned for a third bite at the cherry, armed with the completely wonderful Smother. With Thorpe once more in fine voice and the lads headed in a more reflective, electronica-tinged direction, its hypnotic majesty ought to convert any remaining doubters.
