We’re halfway through 2008 and already it has proved itself to be a great year for music. So it’s surely time to take a look back and remind ourselves just how good it’s been, and give you a chance to pick up any bits that you might have missed.

As well as highlighting the best albums, we’ve put together a little mixtape. Ok, so it’s not a mixtape exactly; it won’t get all tangled in the machine, it won't melt in the sun on the car dash and you won't need to fast forward through the tracks you don't like. But it is a carefully compiled selection of tracks from this year that we think you shouldn’t be without. And unlike the mixtape, you can pick the tracks you want, and the order they go in. Some of the tracks are the big ones, some of them are less well known. We just picked our favourites. And we hope that you like them too...

These New York hipsters, featuring the androgynous warble of Antony Hegarty, bring back all the best bits of disco and re-shape them into a oddball quirkfest that is very definitely all theirs. This is disco 2008 and we like it. To the dancefloor, campers.

Lil Wayne
Tha Carter III

After a series of free mixtapes, the multi award winning rapper finally serves up number three in the Tha Carter series, his first official release since 2005. Good to hear that his whimsical musings are still some of best and maddest around. ‘Best rapper alive’? Quite possibly…
