7digital What we said: Little more than ten months on from the road accident which left him hospitalised, a fully-recovered Bradford Cox is largely downplaying the incident’s influence on Deerhunter’s sixth long-player. Regardless, its impact is inescapable, most notably on Breaker which explicitly references being “jackknifed” and concludes with the couplet, “When I die, there will be nothing to say / Except I’ve tried not to waste another day.” This “carpe diem” ethos extends to the band’s ambitious musical vision too, inspiring the funk swagger of ‘Snakeskin’ and Lockett Pundt’s blissful, synth-led offering ‘Ad Astra’. Arguably the quartet’s most unapologetically melodic and consistently uplifting collection to date, Fading Frontier is also one of our favourite albums of 2015 so far.
