This is precisely what Cuban-French twins Ibeyi do so brilliantly on their debut. Mixing Afro-Cuban percussive instruments like the cajón and batá with simple piano and soulful vocal harmonies, Lisa-Kainde and Naomi Diaz then sensitively layer synths, samples and cutting-edge production techniques on top. The result is a spellbindingly beautiful record that feels utterly contemporary, and yet remains unmistakably rooted in their Yoruba heritage.
