7digital What we said: As an isolated phrase, “semper femina” translates from the Latin as “always a woman”; in the context of Virgil’s original quotation, however, “varium et mutabile semper femina” equates to “woman is ever a fickle and changeable thing.” This polarity sets the framework for Laura Marling’s sixth studio album in less than a decade, a record that destabilises the male gaze to challenge stereotypes surrounding the artistic muse and female creativity. Musically, Marling’s on sparkling form, teaming up with Alabama Shakes-producer Blake Mills and embellishing her intimate folk songs with beautiful, string-led arrangements, be that delicate swoon of violins on ‘The Valley’ or sloping double bass on ‘Soothing’.
