7digital What we said: Naming his debut full-length Sport because he “wanted to make it fun and playful”, Oscar Powell is doing a sterling job of shattering the “stony-faced techno-producer” stereotype. In all fairness, it feels foolish to attempt pigeonholing the Diagonal Records boss, whose productions are as indebted to post-punk as much as they are to dance music. Following that billboard, where Powell shared an email from Steve Albini expressing his deep hatred of club culture, it’s hard not to read the record as an expression of the XL-signing’s similarly skeptical attitude towards club-music conventions. In its non-linear arrangements and wildly unpredictable rhythms, Sport is a tongue-in-cheek take on techno from a talent who’s grinning every step of the way.
