7digital What we said: Tackling an abusive relationship with heartbreaking candour, Sharon Van Etten’s last LP Tramp might not have been the easiest listen but it was breathtakingly beautiful. Lyrically, this follow-up is equally unflinching (sample lyric: “Break my legs so I won’t walk to you”) but there’s been a big change sonically. Gone are those raw, guitar confessionals, and in their place is an expansive style of Americana that’s often lush with strings or imbued with the innate warmth of brass. It’s a gorgeous record, and the perfect vehicle for Van Etten’s soft swoon of a voice.
