7digital What we said: A full 50 years on from his debut, Matthew and Son, the artist formerly known as Cat Stevens is celebrating the anniversary the only way he knows how: by sharing a new album. The Laughing Apple is Yusuf Islam’s 15th, and finds the veteran singer-songwriter still focused on the folk-pop he famously returned to for 2006’s comeback record An Other Cup. Mixing new material inspired by Turkish poetry with reworkings of classic tracks and lost songs like ‘You Can Do (Whatever)’, which was written for the 1971 cult film ‘Harold And Maude’, The Laughing Apple is a fascinating collection and, in terms of arrangements, quite striking in its simplicity.
