Field Day 2016

Festival guide

While you can’t always rely on it being sunny, you can rely on the folk at Field Day to consistently curate the strongest line-ups of UK festival season. This year’s 10th birthday celebrations take place on 11th and 12th June, at London’s Victoria Park, and will feature huge names like James Blake, PJ Harvey and Four Tet, alongside a host of the hottest emerging talent. We’ve selected our personal picks of the bill below.

    PJ Harvey

From its content down to its composition, PJ Harvey’s latest LP is an intriguing proposition. Created before an audience – in a temporary recording studio in the basement of London’s Somerset House – The Hope Six Demolition Project finds Harvey drawing on her travels to examine poverty and displacement in Kosovo, Afghanistan and Washington D.C. She’ll be leading us through the highlights during her headline set on Sunday, and hopefully delving into her rich back catalogue too.

    The Avalanches

Back in 2000, The Avalanches released their debut album to universal acclaim, toured for a year and then all-but disappeared off the face of the planet, bar a couple of mixtapes. We were left wondering, where did they go and would we ever hear new material? After years of rumours, the Aussie electronic collective re-emerged in April to announce handful of live shows, with Field Day being their only UK festival appearance. Head to their set on Sunday to find out the answers to those questions.

    Skepta

A decade on from his debut, Skepta now finds himself at the forefront of the UK’s most vital music scene, both via his solo output and his Boy Better Know imprint. Add this to the fact that his fourth LP is a total triumph and that he now has A-listers like Drake and Kanye clamouring for collaborations, and you’ll understand why we’d suggest you get down to the Tottenham MC’s Saturday set early. Expect mass scream-alongs to ‘Man’, ‘Shutdown’ and ‘That’s Not Me’, and maybe even some special guest stars.
