Following criticism in 2016, the BRITs broadened their voter base for 2017, resulting in their most diverse shortlist to date. Regardless, the biggest successes on the night were Rag'n'Bone Man and David Bowie, who won two awards each, while the show itself featured surprise collaborations from Ed Sheeran and Stormzy, and Coldplay and The Chainsmokers, plus a moving tribute to George Michael from the remaining members of Wham! They were up against bigger names, but there's no denying that The 1975 were the most popular group of 2016, boasting a second album that topped the charts in both the UK and the USA.
Rag'n'Bone Man did the double, picking up both British Breakthrough and Critics' Choice, the first artist to do so in the same year.
