Though famed for their expertly-curated bills, the 2016 edition of The Warehouse Project boasts arguably their strongest line-up yet. Hosted primarily at Manchester’s Store Street Warehouse, with other club nights scattered around the city, this year’s programme stretches for 15 weeks from 23rd September, and features the biggest and best names in electronic music and hip hop. M.I.A.
More than a decade on from her flawless debut, M.I.A. remains one of the UK’s most fiercely independent, politically-engaged and sonically adventurous artists. Fresh from releasing her fifth – and reportedly final – album AIM, she’ll be tearing up the Warehouse Project launch party on 23rd September, headlining a bill that includes David Rodigan, Section Boyz and Novelist. Danny Brown
If possessing one of most distinctive voices in hip hop wasn’t a huge enough head start, Danny Brown boasts an ear for leftfield melodies like no other. Atrocity Exhibition – the forthcoming follow-up to 2013’s acclaimed Old – draws on inspirations as diverse as Joy Division, Björk and System Of A Down, and is the most visceral, inventive and infectious hip hop release of 2016. Hear highlights from it on 11th November, where he's playing alongside Wiley and Clams Casino.
Romare
Taking both his nom de plume and collagist techniques from revered Jazz Age artist Romare Bearden, Archie Fairhurst’s deep admiration for African-American culture underpins his sample-heavy, dancefloor-ready compositions. Following the superlative blend of jazz, blues, funk and soul on 2014’s Projections, he’s readying his second album, Love Songs: Part Two, for November.
